When we met Makayla, she was facing many challenges in her life. Neglect, abuse, and bullying made her childhood challenging and lonely. Through her journey at KyUMH, Makayla has made tremendous steps towards living the life she wants for herself.
We first met Makayla when she came to our residential program. Our compassionate staff helped Makayla open up and heal from her trauma. She says, "I have so many good memories with all the staff. Being with them made them feel like family. I loved going on outings and having fun with everyone."
Makayla also received the support and encouragement she needed to graduate high school. She then moved to our independent living program, where young adults can live in an apartment and receive support from our staff as they learn to live on their own.
Today, Makayla has earned college credit and is making decisions for the future she deserves.
“My experience with KyUMH was amazing,” says Makayla. “The staff are wonderful and have really made a big impact on me. They make me feel like I have a chance in life."
Makayla now lives in a home within the community. Her biggest inspiration is her son. Makayla wants to be the best mom she can be, and she is making choices with him in mind. Makayla continues to receive support from us through our community-based services. Our staff help Makayla by helping her find resources, including an insurance plan where she can earn rewards for attending appointments.
Makayla is also working towards getting her driver’s license to further her independence. Even though stepping out of her comfort zone has led to some anxiety and fear, she is stepping into the freedom she has earned for herself.
Makayla says, “I’m proud of many things that I have accomplished such as helping my mental health, working on becoming a better person, and most importantly becoming a mom. I feel KyUMH has helped me get to where I’m at today.”
Thank you for allowing us to care for Makayla every step of her journey!
