NICHOLASVILLE, Ky — For more than four decades, golfers from across Kentucky have gathered with one purpose: helping children heal. An annual golf tournament hosted by Kentucky United Methodist Children’s Homes has united people across the commonwealth for 43 years in one of central Kentucky’s oldest charity golf tournaments.

For some participants, playing is a generational tradition. “My dad and I came to the second scramble, and I’ve maybe missed only two or three since then,” said Mike Powers, a longtime golfer. “Now, it’s become an annual golf trip for my son and me.”

Many attendees will be quick to tell you they don’t play for the prizes. What matters more to them is the cause. “Taking care of children is extremely important,” said Tommy Dean, a volunteer and participant for more than 10 years. “Playing is not just about being good at golf—you’re doing something good for Kentucky kids.”

Kentucky continues to face a child welfare crisis with the nation’s fifth highest rate of child abuse and neglect. Proceeds from KyUMH’s golf scramble help fund outpatient mental health therapy, residential treatment and independent living support for youth and families. Since its founding, the event has raised $874,000.

The 43^rd Annual Golf Scramble for the Children will take place September 11, 2026 at the Golf Club of the Bluegrass in Nicholasville, Ky. Members of the media are invited to attend to interview organizers, longtime participants and KyUMH leadership.
