One of the questions I hear often is this: "How do you keep hope when you see so much trauma?"
It is a fair question.
Every day at Kentucky United Methodist Children's Homes (KyUMH), we meet children and families who have experienced circumstances no child should ever face. Trauma. Abuse. Neglect. Yet somehow, hope continues to show up.
We see it in the courage of a young person taking their first step toward healing. We see it in parents working hard to create a safer home. We see it in staff who faithfully show up each day because they believe every child deserves to be loved and given the opportunity to thrive.
That hope has been part of our story for 155 years.
How KyUMH Continues to Meet the Needs of Children
We are a 155-year-old agency that is still as vital and needed as ever.
Founded on March 18, 1871, in the aftermath of the Civil War, a group of Christians responded to the desperate needs of orphans and widows. This ministry started when compassionate people looked around Kentucky, saw children in desperate need, and chose to act. They didn't know what the future would hold. They simply responded to the needs in front of them.
Since then, KyUMH has continued asking the same question: “Where do children need us most?”
The answer has changed over the years. We have cared for orphaned children, expanded residential treatment for youth experiencing trauma, created independent living services for young adults, and developed community-based programs that help families stay together whenever it is safe to do so. Our programs have evolved because the needs of Kentucky's children have evolved.
What hasn't changed is our commitment to walk alongside children and families with compassion, faith, and hope.
Supporting Children and Families Through Hope, Healing, and Trauma-Informed Care
Today, we know that many children experience better outcomes when families receive support before a crisis reaches its breaking point. That's why we continue to expand services that strengthen families, provide trauma-informed mental health care, and meet children where they are.
Every child deserves the opportunity to feel safe, supported, and loved. Whether it's through counseling, family support services, residential treatment, or helping young adults transition into independence, our mission remains the same: helping children build brighter futures and creating stronger communities for generations to come.
As a faith-based ministry, we believe God continues to work through compassionate people to accomplish extraordinary things. Even in difficult circumstances, we see healing happen every day and children discovering that their past does not have to define their future.

So, to answer the question: "How do you keep hope when you see so much trauma?" It’s fairly simple. Hope is alive through the people that care and show up for those affected by trauma.

I often say I would love to put us out of business. I would love in the next 50 to 100 years to say we no longer need KyUMH in this state because every child is cared for. That's our vision.
